The key used to sign HRS-AHED package is changing

HRS uses MSIX app packages to distribute the official HRS-AHED application. To ensure the integrity of those packages, they are signed using a Code Signing certificate.

The current key used for signing, with the thumbprint F3A6 2F21 3264 93BD E38D 1B71 4618 F34F EA30 E5D1, is set to expire on 4th August 2022. So, HRS is updating this certificate in favor of a newer and more robust one which will be active for another three years. The thumbprint of this new certificate is CD47 076B 5D1C 6F5E CD6B E606 8B06 3AD8 4A7E 73FF.

When will it be changed?

The new key will be used to sign the next HRS-AHED release, scheduled for September 2022.

What does this means for existing users?

Any existing users who have already configured HRS-AHED in their machines will be affected and will be unable to upgrade their app. This is because once the app is distributed with the new certificate, the updating mechanism will find a conflict between the existing package (the old version already installed) and a new package with the same name but from a different vendor (the new version signed with another certificate). This means that the automatic upgrade process, built-in for MSIX app packages, will fail and the app will not be able to update itself anymore.

What does this mean for new users?

For users who are installing HRS-AHED for the first time, the process will automatically install the app without any prior knowledge of another certificate being used to sign older versions. This means that they will be unaffected by this issue and do not need to do anything beyond following the official installation docs.

What should I do?

If you are a new user, there is nothing specific for you to do other than follow the official installation docs.

If you have already configured HRS-AHED on your machine before September 2022, please follow these simple steps:

  1. Write down the email that you used for registering the app (found under Tools > Options > License).
  2. Exit HRS-AHED and uninstall the application (Windows > Settings > Apps).
  3. Reboot the machine (this step is important).
  4. Reinstall the app again: Visit the Install page and click the Install button.
  5. Register the app using the same email address you had noted in the first step. Your current license should be automatically detected and applied.

I still have problems, what do I do?
